At 4:36am this morning, an unusual earthquake occurred in the West Salem area of Illinois which registered a magnitude of 5.2. In Middle TN, as reports started to filter in to local news media about the shockwaves, some people knew about it, but others were left wondering "What earthquake?". Instead of turning on the television, a lot of people went straight to the search engines — a sign of the times? Currently, Google Trends is reporting three references of the earthquake in the top 10 of 'Today's Hot Trends'. So how did the search engines perform when it came to providing information? Between Google, Yahoo!, LiveSearch and Ask, it seems like Google came out on top.

It is a common misconception from people outside the search industry, that organic traffic is obtained free of charge. They see two things: PPC = Spending Money, and SEO = Free traffic.
