I’m someone who has experience going through hard drive crash hell with my MacBook Pro. The last time it happened to me was in 2006 and it cost me several thousand dollars to recover most of my hard drive data. Soon after that happened, we wrote about how to backup your Mac intelligently so we could help other people avoid what I had to go through. Although that article is still relevant today, new services and software have come out that make backing up your Mac even easier.
A good backup plan involves having two copies of your data — one ...

If you’ve been following Apple’s patents over the past few years, you would have noticed a trend in tablet-like devices and innovative ways to interact with electronic devices (like gestures on MacBooks and iPhone’s user interface.) I believe 2009 will be the year they finally release what they’ve been building up to. It’s not based (solely) on wishful thinking. Instead, it’s based on logical next steps and the success (and failures) of their competitors.
There are specific features that I believe this device will have, and they’ll be targeted not just at Microsoft and PC makers, but also at Amazon.com. In ...

While I was at a party recently, I pulled out my iPhone, which was (embarrassingly) naked. Fortunately, Dave Delaney (of the iPod/Phone accessory giant Griffin Technology) was nearby and offered to hook me up with a Clarifi.
The Clarifi is a slick (both figuratively and also not rubbery) iPhone case that has a little lens that slides over the iPhone’s built-in camera. The idea is to add the ability to take close-up photos that aren’t blurry. See for yourself:
As an added bonus, the case also comes with a screen protector and Griffin-branded microfiber cloth.
While I’m not a huge fan ...

It’s hard to sell something you don’t really believe in. That’s the assumption I’ve been making with Microsoft’s new ad campaign, created by Crispin Porter & Bogusky. Microsoft has thrown some $300 million dollars at CP&B to make them pretty again, but the only thing they’ve been able to do is a sloppy job of plastic surgery. The entire campaign has seemingly been sloppily handled, as indicated by an abrupt confusion and stop of the Gates & Seinfeld ads and the overtly touted spending budget. With such PR and marketing gaffes, it’s made Microsoft once again an easy target, as ...

Apple just released Safari 4.0 Developer Preview to its developers. The new browser comes with several new features, including:
CSS support for masks, gradients, reflections, and specifying a named canvas.
Rudimentary support for the WAI-ARIA (Rich Internet Application) and cross-site XMLHttpRequest specifications.
The ability to send messages between documents
Storage of data either locally or just for the user’s session
The option of running web applications outside of a browser or when disconnected from the network
Canvas pixel manipulation
Safari is still playing catchup to Firefox on some fronts. For example, Firefox has supported WAI-ARIA since version 1.5. However, the Safari team seems to be pushing the ...

My iPhone now sports Griffin Technology’s ClearBoost, a protective polycarbonate case with a built-in antenna booster. I was the lucky recipient of a pre-launch product, and I’ve had a couple of days to test it out. If my iPhone could talk, I am sure it would be thanking Griffin for finally providing protection, from me. I drop it at least once a week, usually on a painfully hard surface. ClearBoost would have helped yesterday when I dropped in in Nashville’s Commerce Street garage.
But, hands down, the biggest plus is the improved signal. The case has a small stub on the ...

At Sitening, we’re strictly an Apple shop — we use Macs in every part of our workflow. Several of us yesterday were watching a live feed of Steve Jobs’ Keynote speech with keen interest, “oohing” and “aahing” as the feed was updated with shiny new products. This led me to ponder what we could learn from the man who only wears a black turtle neck and blue jeans.

Whether it be a new SEO tool, new optimizing technique or new product, being an innovator in your field can garner you some attention. Take the MacBook Air as an example. It ...

My favorite company for recovering hard drives, DriveSavers, now supports data recovery for the iPhone. I first wrote about DriveSavers back in May, 2006. They did an amazing job recovering my Macintosh hard drive after going through a horrible ordeal with another hard drive recovery company.
In their release, they discussed some of their experience and success working with iPhone hard drives.
Solid state drives (SSD)—built into iPhones—use less power, run silently and are more resistant to shock than common hard drives. However, this technology can also be compromised by user error, mismanagement and software or hardware failure. Last year, DriveSavers successful ...

The Apple Store is a fun place to dream. Unfortunately, my orders usually end being the lowest end configuration. For example, if I were to buy the Mac Pro, the lowest price option would be $2,299.00. But what would the price tag be if I allowed myself to dream a little? I configured the new Mac Pro with the best options possible. The price tag? A whopping $27,340.90! Here’s what you get:
Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
32GB (8 x 4GB)
Mac Pro RAID Card
300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB (Stereo 3D, two dual-link DVI)

Apple made their iPhone firmware update available to the public before making it available via iTunes. The file itself weighs in at 160MB and can be downloaded here: iPhone Firmware 1.1.2
The only problem has been the lack of information on how to install the giant file. Although many people have linked to the file, a lot people have struggled to figure out how to install it. Fortunately, it’s an easy process.
Step 1: In iTunes, on the iPhone screen, Option+Click the Restore button (for Windows users it’s Shift+Click).
That’s it! Just one step, then follow the instructions.
