The Greatest iPhone App You Don’t Have

Friday, December 19th, 2008
Sometimes there are ideas, and then sometimes there are ideas that just have to be made. Over what I can only assume were geek beers, the idea for Purr was born and as of today can be obtained from the iTunes Music Store. Designed by our Guru of Everything™ Scott Holdren, the Purr application for your iPhone or iPod Touch gives you the ability to pet your cat. Yup, you read that right, pet your cat. If you are ever away from home and just feel the need to pet your cat, Purr hooks you up with not only a picture ...

Product Review for Griffin ClearBoost for iPhone

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008
My iPhone now sports Griffin Technology’s ClearBoost, a protective polycarbonate case with a built-in antenna booster. I was the lucky recipient of a pre-launch product, and I’ve had a couple of days to test it out. If my iPhone could talk, I am sure it would be thanking Griffin for finally providing protection, from me. I drop it at least once a week, usually on a painfully hard surface. ClearBoost would have helped yesterday when I dropped in in Nashville’s Commerce Street garage. But, hands down, the biggest plus is the improved signal. The case has a small stub on the ...

DriveSavers Now Supports Data Recovery for iPhones

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008
My favorite company for recovering hard drives, DriveSavers, now supports data recovery for the iPhone. I first wrote about DriveSavers back in May, 2006. They did an amazing job recovering my Macintosh hard drive after going through a horrible ordeal with another hard drive recovery company. In their release, they discussed some of their experience and success working with iPhone hard drives. Solid state drives (SSD)—built into iPhones—use less power, run silently and are more resistant to shock than common hard drives. However, this technology can also be compromised by user error, mismanagement and software or hardware failure. Last year, DriveSavers successful ...

New Evidence of an Apple iPhone SDK

Friday, October 5th, 2007
This afternoon I received an announcement from the Apple Developer Connection announcing their upcoming Performance Tuning workshops. These intensive developer camps aren’t unusual – Apple hosted iPhone web development seminars this summer. However, the description for this one caught my eye. It read (emphasis mine): These 3-day workshops are designed to provide you with the tools and understanding you need to enhance application performance on Apple’s desktop and mobile platforms. Mobile platforms? That’s odd. Maybe it simply means they’ll throw in some iPhone Javascript training into the mix. Although it’s strange that they’d pluralize “platforms” – unless they’re counting iPod, iPhone is ...

iPhone Owners Feeling Sore About Apple’s Price Drop Should “Share Their Story”

Thursday, September 6th, 2007
Yesterday, Apple announced an immediate and significant price reduction for the iPhone — down from $599 to $399. Normally, a price reduction like this would be good news, but not if you were an early adopter who purchased the phone within the last two months. In fact, that’s the rub. The iPhone has only been out for two months! I’m an early adopter of the iPhone, and I wasn’t thrilled when I heard about the price drop, but I tend to fall into the John Gruber camp. Apple didn’t cut the price because demand is low — they set the debut price ...

iPhone Sudoku

Friday, July 6th, 2007
Ever since attending the iPhone development session at WWDC last month, I’ve been itching to build my first web site for Apple’s new device. Tonight I took some time off and set out to see what I could come up with. I gave myself a time limit: two hours. I wanted to build something that could really take advantage of the iPhone’s touch screen. It also needed to be lightweight enough to load quickly on AT&T’s Edge network. After a short brainstorming session I decided to give Sudoku a try. I must say, it turned out great. The whole site is a ...
