How to Easily Manage Multiple WordPress Sites With One Database and One Code Base

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008
Updated with security fixes We create a lot of websites at Sitening. Although most of our clients use our yet-to-be-released custom content management system (CMS), most of the micro-sites and blogs we build use WordPress. Depending on the client and the strategy, we can sometimes build twenty or more WordPress-driven sites. That used to mean that we had to have individual folders for each site, with individual installs of WordPress. We were able to use the same the database by using table prefixes, but updating to a new version of WordPress was always a hassle — at least until now. Scott Holdren ...

How to Grab a Screenshot of an Entire Web Page

Saturday, March 15th, 2008
Web designers and marketers often need full-size screenshots for before-and-after shots and also for portfolio pieces. Fortunately, there’s many ways to create website screenshots. However, among all of the options, my favorite way to make full-length screenshots is by using Screengrab! — a Firefox Add-on. Using Screengrab! is about as easy as it gets. Simply bring up the page you want to grab and then click on the Screengrab! icon on the status bar. The result is a full-sized screenshot of the Web page. I used it to take a screenshot of Snipplr, our public code snippet repository for designers and programmers.

How to Build Fast, High-Capacity Podcast Sites on the Cheap!

Thursday, February 21st, 2008
Originally presented at PodCamp Nashville Many people have figured out how to record, edit and create their podcasts, but they don’t know how to easily setup a podcast website — let alone, set it up for the possibility of hundreds or thousands of people downloading it at one time. This tutorial shows you how to setup a fast, high-capacity podcast website without spending a lot of money. A key component to this solution is Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service). S3 provides very cheap file storage and high-capacity delivery. That enables you to distribute your audio files to thousands of people at one ...

A Third (Smaller) Option for Embedding Flash Using JavaScript

Thursday, December 27th, 2007
In January (2007), I wrote a howto for embedding Flash using JavaScript. The examples I gave were for SWFObject and Unobtrusive Flash Objects (UFO) — the howto was for UFO. Now there’s a third viable option for embedding Flash using JavaScript. It’s called FlashReplace and was written by Robert Nyman. The unique feature of FlashReplace is its size. Compared to SWFObject, it’s about three times smaller, and compared to UFO, it’s about five times smaller. Instructions are available on the main FlashReplace page.

Avoiding the Digg Effect on Textpattern: How to Install Page Caching

Sunday, November 18th, 2007
Textpattern is a fast content management system (CMS). In fact, many tests have shown it to be much faster than its competitors, like WordPress. However, it’s still a CMS, which means its content is dynamic and it requires a connection to a database to serve complete pages to a Web browser. That can be a major problem if the website receives a huge amount of traffic from being Dugg on Digg. The best way to prepare Textpattern — or any other dynamically driven site — is to setup page caching. Page caching creates a static version of a page. The static ...

Christmas Comes Early

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007
Occasionally the stars align and our favorite tech companies grant wishes. Today was one of those days. Not only did Apple finally fix the Leopard dock (and by fix I mean make it not butt-ugly), but Google just dropped a Gmail bombshell – IMAP support. I’ve kept a fifty dollar bill handy for the last few years – ready to send it over to Google if they’d just turn on IMAP. Looks like I don’t even have to do that much. It’s free!

Flexiscale, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Nirvanix Comparison

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007
FlexiScale is a new UK based on-demand computing service, similar to Nirvanix and the EC2/S3/SQS components of Amazon Web Services. While they all provide basic computing and storage through a pay-as-you-go pricing model, each company has targeted their pricing and service offerings towards different users. Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides a complete set of very simple, inexpensive services that can be combined to create any application. The caveat is that you must develop and manage everything yourself; they provide no control panels or sophisticated to help build and manage your network. Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) allows for storage ...

8 Essential Plugins for TextPattern

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007
Textpattern is a free and open source content management system (CMS) that is powerful and easy to use. Its unique framework and workflow makes it easy for designers or software developers to quickly build dynamic, database driven websites. Although Textpattern’s default installation provides a lot of useful features, it doesn’t try to be everything for everybody. Instead, it has an intelligent PHP based plugin system that allows programmers to write their own add-on code to enhance its functionality. After using Textpattern extensively for personal and client websites, I was able to create the essential plugin list for Textpattern. This list contains what ...
