Griffin Clarifi

Thursday, December 11th, 2008
While I was at a party recently, I pulled out my iPhone, which was (embarrassingly) naked. Fortunately, Dave Delaney (of the iPod/Phone accessory giant Griffin Technology) was nearby and offered to hook me up with a Clarifi. The Clarifi is a slick (both figuratively and also not rubbery) iPhone case that has a little lens that slides over the iPhone’s built-in camera. The idea is to add the ability to take close-up photos that aren’t blurry. See for yourself: As an added bonus, the case also comes with a screen protector and Griffin-branded microfiber cloth. While I’m not a huge fan ...

Cross Browser Testing

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008
I recently started using a new service called CrossBrowserTesting, and it’s so incredibly awesome I felt compelled to write a review.  First some background… Browser compatibility is a difficult challenge for all web designers and developers.  The process of debugging HTML, CSS, or Javascript problems that only occur on specific platforms is both tedious and frustrating.  At Sitening we run either Parallels or VMWare on our laptops so we can launch Windows and test the sites we’re working on.  Unfortunately, this is a time-consuming process, and the results are often suspect.  While it is possible to install multiple versions of IE, ...

Product Review for Griffin ClearBoost for iPhone

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008
My iPhone now sports Griffin Technology’s ClearBoost, a protective polycarbonate case with a built-in antenna booster. I was the lucky recipient of a pre-launch product, and I’ve had a couple of days to test it out. If my iPhone could talk, I am sure it would be thanking Griffin for finally providing protection, from me. I drop it at least once a week, usually on a painfully hard surface. ClearBoost would have helped yesterday when I dropped in in Nashville’s Commerce Street garage. But, hands down, the biggest plus is the improved signal. The case has a small stub on the ...

TechCrunch Releases New Version of CrunchBase

Monday, February 11th, 2008
If there’s anything important or interesting going on in technology, then you’ll probably find it on TechCrunch. TechCrunch has become the source for technology industry news and they spend much of their time obsessively profiling and reviewing new Internet products and companies. They’ve actually taken that one step further with the (re)introduction of CrunchBase. CrunchBase is a free directory of technology companies, people, and investors that now anyone can edit. Although anyone can edit the directory, it appears that all edits are heavily moderated, which I consider to be a good thing. It ensures the quality of the data and ...

Review of Flock 1.0 – Get Your Flock On!

Friday, November 2nd, 2007
Having never heard about Flock before, I was curious to see if it was just another browser jumping on the social networking bandwagon. Being a dedicated Firefox user, taking advantage of its rich user experience at work and at home, Flock will have to work its pants off to get me to use it as my browser of choice — even 30% of the time. When you consider how far Firefox has come in a short amount of time, it’s pretty staggering to think that we once surfed the web without it. Ouch, my head hurts just thinking of having ...

Cold Hands Require Alien Gloves

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007
I’m hot-natured and I crave air conditioning. This is especially true for where I live — Nashville, TN. Having the climate control set to around 72 degrees Farenheit is heaven for me. At work, when it’s not in the triple digits like it was the entire month of August 2007, our office stays relatively cool. I’m fortunate enough to have my desk right underneath an air conditioning vent, providing me enough cool air for perfect body temperature homeostasis. However, there’s a cruel consequence to being close to an air conditioning vent, cold hands! Although the majority of my body enjoys the ...

People Search Engines: PeekYou vs. Spock

Friday, September 7th, 2007
In the world of Internet search, there appears to be an ongoing shift away from traditional search engines like Google and Yahoo!, and a movement towards niche search engines like PeekYou and Spock. Although traditional search engines are excellent for finding a wide variety of information, they often provide a lot of information that has nothing to do with the type of search you’re conducting. For example, if you’re searching for a person on Google, they often present search results that list random pages and documents that are loosely related to the person you’re searching for — hardly ideal. This ...

8 Essential Plugins for TextPattern

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007
Textpattern is a free and open source content management system (CMS) that is powerful and easy to use. Its unique framework and workflow makes it easy for designers or software developers to quickly build dynamic, database driven websites. Although Textpattern’s default installation provides a lot of useful features, it doesn’t try to be everything for everybody. Instead, it has an intelligent PHP based plugin system that allows programmers to write their own add-on code to enhance its functionality. After using Textpattern extensively for personal and client websites, I was able to create the essential plugin list for Textpattern. This list contains what ...

ABC News Redesign: A Case Study In What Not To Do

Sunday, April 29th, 2007
One of my favorite news websites is was ABCNews.com. They recently redesigned their website and destroyed most of what I liked about it. Their old design was similar to the New York Times. They had an easy to read home page that made all of the headlines visible. I could quickly scroll down the page and view all of the top stories. The only interactive component on the website was an image gallery that was related to the top five stories they were promoting. It acted as a slideshow and allowed the user to pause and click through the different ...

Screenshots and Walkthrough of Google’s New AdSense Referral Product

Thursday, April 5th, 2007
Google started rolling out their new AdSense Referral product on Thursday night. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of their new product that is in beta — shocking, I know. Referrals Google Referrals allow you to choose specific products or keywords as ads on your site. This allows you to match content directly to the ads and encourage users to complete the action associated with the ad. To start, pick up to 15 products below and add them to the “Ad Shopping Cart” to the right. You should also choose up to 10 keywords to ensure you get newer ads matching those keywords as they ...
