Whatever happened to the creative and playful article titles that we grew up with? Well, the Internet gobbled them up and Google determined that they were irrelevant.
Search engine optimizers have known the importance of article titles for some time now and traditional media (newspapers, magazines, etc…) are just now starting to catch up. Chris Sherman on Search Engine Watch highlights this in his article, “Getting The New York Times More Search Engine Friendly.”
The Times, like most newspapers, has a long-standing tradition of writing compelling headlines that grab human-readers, but that may not literally describe the news story. For example, when ...

Just about everyone has used the BitTorrent protocol to download illegal (cough…) legal music, images, videos, applications and documents. In fact, for many people — except for me of course — they use BitTorrent clients (like Xtorrent) to search and download the files they’re most interested in. What most people don’t know is that BitTorrent is an excellent way to market your website.
I’ll start with a more sinister example — one that I don’t condone and is actually quite annoying, but it illustrates my point very well. The Golden Compass recently debuted in theaters all over the world. However, before ...

One of the best resources from PubCon (so far) came from Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz. Although Rand requested that the audience not publicly publish this list, I thought it would still be a good resource for Raven users. I published his list of links that cover the following topics — about 60 links in all — on Raven’s private SEO Forum.
Great Sites for nofollow Links
20 Websites with Strong Profile Rankings
12 Sites You Aren’t Using, but Should be for Viral Content
Again, to view this list, you have to have a Raven user account. Access to Raven is currently free during our ...

This morning’s panel on duplicate content included representatives from Google, Yahoo!, Ask, and Microsoft. Each panelist brought some interesting perspective on the problem of duplicate content, along with strategies to fix those problems.
There are several sources of duplicate content, including site structure, dynamic urls, multiple domain names, and scraping (other sites stealing your content). Solving a scraping problem involves filing complaints and possible legal action. But the other sources of duplicate content have technical solutions that are relatively straightforward to implement.
Crawl your own site — this will help you identify any index barriers, including duplicate content.

When considering taking on an SEO campaign you should be realistic about your chances of success. Promising the world and delivering nothing gives SEO, and those in the industry, a bad name. Implementing an organic SEO campaign or using white hat techniques may take longer to achieve better SERPs, but it’s far more sustainable for the long term.
Steve Haar over at Search Engine Watch wrote an article about SEO Expectations and Commitments in which he outlined the following items to consider when embarking on an organic SEO campaign:
Plan to keep in it for the long haul
Be patient
Set Objectives
Keep people informed
Set ...

Article distribution can be a very effective method for gaining inbound links and traffic to a website. As part of an SEO campaign it can be time consuming, but if completed and carried out correctly, it can make a significant impact on search engine performance.
When you using article distribution, you should focus on the following three areas:
Niche
Content
Audience
Niche
A lot of article distribution sites will have categories or tags that you can choose when submitting your article. A well written article submitted to the wrong category might as well never have been submitted.

Keyword research is an absolute must before you begin an SEO campaign. Targeting the wrong keywords may result in meaningless, ineffective search engine rankings. It can also result in lost revenue due to the inability of a potential customer to find you on a search engine.
Lisa Barone at the Search Engine Guide wrote about the five steps to effective research. Those steps are divided into the following phases:
Five Steps to Effective Keyword Research
Phase 0 — Demolishing Misconceptions
Phase 1 — Creating the list and checking it twice
Phase 2 — Befriending the keyword research tool
Phase 3 — Finalizing your list
Phase 4 — ...

Mention search engines to anyone these days and chances are the first thing they’re going to think of is Google, and rightly so; Google does a great job. However, other search engines do exist, such as Yahoo!, Ask and Live Search — just to name but a few. As SEO specialists, it’s important to understand how most, if not all, search engines work. In fact, it’s crucial that SEO specialists understand the how search engines collect data, rank websites and return results.

“Lets build a web site.”
“Okay, but we need to make it look good!”
“We also need to be able to find it on the search engines!”
