SEO Howto: Speed Up Your Site for Google

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
This year has been a good year for me and Google. 2009 brought more love to our love/hate relationship, mainly because of two major announcements. The first announcement had to do with my longtime infatuation with microformats and Google’s inclusion of rich snippets, like hReview microformats, into their SERPs. The second announcement came from Matt Cutts at PubCon in Las Vegas. During his panel, he strongly suggested that 2010 would be the year of site speed. More specifically, site speed would be added as a new ranking factor. Further evidence of this new change can be found in Google’s recent ...

Blog Commenting as an Effective Lead Generation Strategy

Monday, November 23rd, 2009
When it comes to link building, driving exposure to a website, and affiliate marketing, commenting on blogs is still alive and well. One of the things I love about Internet marketing is the constant adaptation of techniques. For example, while blog comment marketing is still prevalent, the approaches used by marketers are constantly changing. There was a technique I recently observed by a blog commenter on our Internet Marketing Blog that I wanted to highlight. It’s an example of a semi-elaborate scheme that involves posing as a real person (she might be a real person, but I’m still thinking fem bot!) ...

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009
Web enabled smartphones are here to stay and are growing rapidly. The iPhone takes up as much as 69% of smartphone traffic, and smartphones account for 15% of the entire US mobile phone market. The opportunity to optimize for the mobile Internet is right now. Mobile Web Indicators Mobile Web indicators can be split into four segments: Usage Usage is primarily about data – how much? how many? how fast? The data can include text messaging, MMS, WAP users accessing email, games, reading news, and people using their mobile network to access the Internet from their personal computers. Network Network performance indicators can be split into ...

The Search for an SEO Blueprint

Monday, July 27th, 2009
The reporting of ROI for SEO and Social Media services is murky at best. That’s why compiling weekly and monthly reports for clients is one of the most time-consuming, frustrating, and yet rewarding parts of a search engine optimizer’s job. Unless you operate within a certain niche, it’s unlikely that you have two clients who offer the same type of service – which is no bad thing. Personally, I like the variety of working on something different on a regular basis. Variety brings with it numerous factors to take into consideration each time you begin work with a different client: The number ...

Check Readability & Keyword Relevance with the Content Analyzer

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009
An old R&D project has finally seen the light of day. We had played around with copy analysis a long time ago, but got distracted with some other features we wanted to work on for Raven. Yesterday afternoon we stumbled upon this feature and decided to clean it up and push it live. We hope you like it and look forward to getting your feedback on it so we can make it better in the future. This video will show you how to use the new analysis feature in the Content Manager.

Creating Dofollow Links On Delicious

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009
Delicious is well known for playing around with their nofollow policy. One of the more recent nofollow discoveries occurred when they relaunched their new design. For example, when you visit a user’s bookmark page (http://delicious.com/username) it defaults to the “Regular View”. However, if you clicked on the “Full View” link, it would display the links as dofollow (without the nofollow attribute.) They quickly closed that loophole, but now they’re up to something new and something much more intentional. Thanks to Raven’s Automated Link Checker, I discovered that links that had been saved in our Link Manager had become dofollow. After doing ...

The Modern Link Exchange (aka Reciprocal Linking In 2009)

Friday, January 16th, 2009
Jeremy Rivera recently brought David Harry’s article on reciprocal linking to my attention. David makes the case that reciprocal linking is pointless and points to patents by Yahoo! to help make his point. The main goal of the patent is to automatically identify (over done) reciprocal links that may be orchestrated to inflate ones rankings (Viagra for PageRank). While they offer the standard machine learning tactics to accomplish the automation, it is still based on initial human input to establish a training set. To me this is often the Achilles heel as new tactics need to be identified to be fed ...

What Is SEO ROI?

Monday, December 29th, 2008
Return on Investment (ROI) is what every client wants from a search marketing agency. It’s an easy thing to calculate if you’re doing Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. If your revenue is higher than your spend, PPC management fees and cost of goods, then your client is getting a return on their investment. Although it’s simple to figure out ROI for PPC, the same cannot be said for search engine optimization (SEO). Search marketing agencies that provide SEO services have traditionally reported ROI in a variety of ways. The most common approach to SEO ROI has been search engine ranking. If a company ...

8 Steps to a Successful SEO Campaign: Linkbuilding

Thursday, October 16th, 2008
Each aspect of an SEO campaign defines its own area of importance. Building links should be no different. While significant in its contribution, link building on its own does not make or break an SEO campaign. If you’re investing all of your time, energy and resources building links, it may be time for you to change scope. A Link is a Link, Right? Just like the myth that #1 rankings can be achieved overnight, treating all links as equal can lead down the road to SEO oblivion. The type of links you should be looking to build are: DoFollow High Authority Relevant Permanent The type of links ...
