I’m spending the day at PodCamp Nashville, where 500 or so members of the social media marketing community are gathered to hear members of the community speak on things they are passionate about, as well as plenty of fun networking. Sessions are running all day long on anything from SEO for Wordpress to covering tax issues for small business. This community always has a wealth of information, and is always willing to share that with others, which is awesome to be a part of. I’ll be liveblogging throughout the day to share sessions and all of the great information that ...

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending PodCamp Nashville 2009, a great “un”conference put on by members of the tech community here in town. The previous three Camps I had a heavy hand in organizing and implementing, so it was nice to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the day’s worth of panels and networking. There were a wide variety of panels to choose from, everything from social media to Wordpress to Drupal programming. What I love most about Camps, besides getting some of my favorite people in Nashville all together in one room, is that the community comes ...

This past Saturday, Stasia asked Kate and myself to speak with her at TWISTER, or Tennessee Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Research. We spoke to a room of about 50 9-12th grade girls who were interested in doing something in a career in technology, most likely because our panel was titled “You Too Can YouTube”. What high school kid wouldn’t want to come to that? The three of us explained to the girls how we came to work in technology, and many of them were blown away by the fact that we got to do so many “cool” things ...

If you’ve been following Apple’s patents over the past few years, you would have noticed a trend in tablet-like devices and innovative ways to interact with electronic devices (like gestures on MacBooks and iPhone’s user interface.) I believe 2009 will be the year they finally release what they’ve been building up to. It’s not based (solely) on wishful thinking. Instead, it’s based on logical next steps and the success (and failures) of their competitors.
There are specific features that I believe this device will have, and they’ll be targeted not just at Microsoft and PC makers, but also at Amazon.com. In ...

This year at BarCamp Nashville, I presented on how to make Google your prison slave. One of the concepts I talked about was the idea of capturing a competitor’s traffic through the use of product review websites. There are three key elements to this approach:
Keyword centric domain name
Reviews include good details and images of the competitor’s products
Every review includes a "Recommendations" section at the end, comparing and linking to your product page
The best way to create a site like this is to make sure it looks professional. You may want to consider building it on WordPress and then using a ...

Last week, I gave a talk at BarCamp Nashville on Leveraging Web Service APIs. Many thanks to the conference organizers who were able to move me to a session later in the day at the last minute because of a funeral that morning. For anyone who couldn’t make it to the talk, I created a PDF of my presentation. Sorry to anyone who couldn’t find the ThisCamp room. We were tucked away behind the bar.

I ain’t gonna lie, y’all, I’m tired. Along with my duties of producing content for Sitening, I’ve been working for months on BarCamp Nashville. What is BarCamp Nashville? Well I’m glad you asked! Let me point you to something I wrote for the BarCamp website:
BarCamp is free to all of those who would like to attend and is a fantastic way to hear about all of the exciting things happening in Nashville’s digital world as well as meet some of your peers from not only Nashville but from all around the country. The event will be a full day of ...

Since we’re an online marketing and PR firm, we here at Sitening feel really warm and fuzzy inside when a prevalent form of new media showcases one of our clients. Popular parenting podcast Jumping Monkeys recently interviewed InstantAmber founder Matt Berman about why he started InstantAmber and how the system works. Hosted by Megan Morrone and Leo Laporte, the Jumping Monkeys podcast covers a wide variety of parenting tips such as children’s health, reviews of children’s books, even how to start saving for your children’s higher education.
On the InstantAmber centric episode of Jumping Monkeys, Matt tells the story of how ...

If there is anything that is up in the air these days when it comes to telecommunications, it’s phones. Land lines, cell phones, VoIP – there have never been more options when it comes to phone service. But what do you do with that number that you’ve had forever and want to either use cross platform or just hang onto for a while? Nashville company NumberGarage allows you to hang on to that phone number you love and do one of two things with your number: park it or forward it.
Parking your phone number allows you to hold onto your ...

My alma mater is a pretty popular place these days. The second 2008 Presidential debate is being held next week at Belmont University, which is just blocks from our offices at Sitening. There was word on the street that an amazing feat of temporary technology infrastructure was being built just around the corner, so I had to take a peek. Jason and I got a fantastic tour of everything being brought in and built for the event. Let’s just say the Belmont debate is as good as telecommunications gets. Fiber everywhere. Over 500 dedicated land lines. Generators to run the ...
